Harbour workshop - a place for creativity and projects with recycled terrazzo
Recycled terrazzo opens up new possibilities for transferring identity-forming materials from existing buildings into contemporary interiors.
One example of this is the harbour workshop in Hamburg, a conversion of a former butcher's shop. Here, the characteristic red clinker bricks of the existing building were dismantled, recycled as aggregate and processed into terrazzo. The space combines holistically with hemp stones, clay plasters, hand-cast elements and forged metalwork.
The new materiality allows the site to be experienced as a grown structure: irregularities, slight colour variations and individual inclusions create a design depth that is almost impossible to achieve in industrially produced surfaces. For interior design, this approach offers the opportunity to utilise existing materials as an identity-forming component of new spatial concepts, thus creating added value both in terms of design and ecology.
